Wow. What a day. I was hammering away at work and I got word that Rabbit had a tumble at work. Poor Rabbit! Anyhow, most of the day was taken up by waiting around in emergency while listening to the complaints of our fellow patients.

While we were passing the time we learned among other things that the word patient is something of a misnomer. We sat across from some marginally friendly yahoos who didn’t feel as though the hospital’s anti cell phone policy applied to people who were millwrights making $40 an hour and on call. “If they want to pay me $40 an hour to sit here with my cell phone off then I’ll shut it off”, one of them explained.

The only reason that I knew about the rule was that I had been nabbed by security on the way in while finishing a telephone conversation. The security guard informed me that the phones will affect the heart monitors and then suggested I park my car in one of the Hospitals parking spaces instead. Since it was news to me, I gave me new associates the benefit of the doubt and let them know about the Hospital’s policy as well. After the witty one liner mentioned above, he continued with “that rule is just because of the waves the cell phones make in the air…” while waving his uninjured hand to demonstrate the movements of one of these aberrant apparitions.

I try not to get to upset about these things as I imagine that this kind of stuff goes on while I’m not around as well. Even so, I find myself hoping he will one day experience the horror of being visited in the hospital by some cell-phone wielding relative or friend while he is hooked up to a heart monitor.
